ogps.med.umich.edu/micipp/I did not particularly think about the fact that I was a first-generation college student till later in my life. Such things were not considered or openly talked about in India, the country where I grew up and completed education before starting my PhD in the USA. The combined impact of being first-gen and challenges around limited financial resources when I was growing up, now deeply influence my work and provide me with a larger purpose. These experiences combined with my life as a woman-of-color immigrant, consciously and subconsciously direct my work in creating inclusive programs - ranging from teaching undergrads, masters, and PhD students in the classroom to advising them for professional and career success while advocating for the needs of marginalized trainees. I continually learn and grow from the unique struggles of different marginalized trainees and colleagues I work with.
