2013-2016: Founder & Instructor, 03-709, Applied Cell and Molecular Biology Taught for 4 semesters; This is a core course for the Masters in Computational Biology Program at CMU *SYLLABUS LINK* Summary of my innovative pedagogy work • Created a “flipped” classroom by using extensive Just-in-Time-Teaching (JiTT) tools, in-class group activities, primary literature readings, verbal final exams • Awarded the Wimmer Faculty Fellowship in 2014 to implement these changes • Awarded ProSEED grant for technology-enhanced learning 2013-2017: Co-Founder & Instructor, 02-602, Professional Skills in Computational Biology Taught for 8 semesters; This is a core course for the Masters in Computational Biology Program at CMU *SYLLABUS LINK* • Developed the curriculum to prepare MS students for professional success • Covered topics including resumes, cover letters, networking, elevator pitches, and interviewing skills • Introduced new interactive elements, including talks by alumni and employers, recruiters • Established a requirement for students to write a reflection statement and key action items toward career goals 2009-2016: Founder & Instructor, 03-748, Scientific Speaking and Peer Review Course Taught for 7 semesters ; This is a course offered to PhD in Biological Sciences at CMU *SYLLABUS LINK* • Developed curriculum to present principles of effective scientific communication to PhD students. • Piloted as workshop, converted to a 3-unit course in fall 2016 ______________________________________________________________ Existing Courses Redesigned & Taught at Carnegie Mellon University 2012-2013: Instructor, 03-121, Modern Biology. Taught 2 semesters • Introduced clicker quizzes to engage active class participation (enrollment ~180) • Introduced video material in lectures to help visual learning • Incorporated self-grading online assignments for low stakes practice before exams • Created 1:1 and small group tutoring initiatives, in addition to office hours 2012-2013: Instructor, 03-121 Summer, Modern Biology Taught 2 semesters (includes advance-level high school students) • Updated the syllabus and adopted a new textbook to be inclusive of high school students (from all over the country) attending CMU’s APEA program • Introduced a new final project, where paired students researched and shared a new groundbreaking discovery, a major controversy, an important disease, or a new technique. 2012: Instructor, 38-709, Applied Cell and Molecular Biology.
